Outdoor emergency shower

Comfortcool – Safetyman’s Outdoor Emergency Shower

The reason why Safetyman’s Comfortcool™ outdoor emergency shower was invented is the fact that, in ordinary showers, which essentially are only suitable for indoor or shaded locations, water is held static in the body of the shower and, if subject to solar radiation, becomes exceedingly hot; so hot, in fact, that affected persons, seeking relief from corrosive splash, can suffer scalding as well.

Moreover, this is not the only problem with over-temperature water. Hot water can open the pores of the skin to allow greater contaminant ingress and, in some circumstances; it can accelerate adverse chemical reactions, to the detriment of the patient.

This, of course, is an unacceptable risk and, it is why Safetyman developed the Comfortcool™ outdoor emergency shower.

Comfortcool™ is a unique outdoor emergency shower system for which patents have been granted in Australia, the United States and elsewhere. Moreover, it has won the Australian Design Award.

The ComfortcoolTM outdoor emergency shower principle is simple.

The central pipe or water supply tube containing the static water is jacketed with a percolating type hose and this jacket contains water. The percolating hose is one that allows water to slowly ooze water through the hose wall of the patented Safetyman ComfortcoolTM outdoor emergency shower.

Essentially, the water in the jacket acts as an insulator and to a limited extent insulates the supply tube from solar heat. In addition, the jacket allows water to percolate out in a very limited and controlled manner, so that it can be evaporated from the outer surface.

This removes latent heat from the assembly and, thereby provides positive cooling of the water supply. The supply water is cool and comfortable.

Even in the most extreme climatic conditions it keeps the contained water cool. As water evaporates from the outside surface of the jacket, the jacket is constantly refilled through an adjustable needle valve, from the water supply pipe.

The ComfortcoolTM outdoor emergency shower is explained in more detail by means of the diagram:

The indicated components are: (1) water supply tube (2) Needle valve (3) Percolating hose jacket.

Water from the reticulated supply is held static in the supply tube (1)  A needle valve (2) allows water from the water supply tube to enter the jacket cavity (3) (shown in GREEN) From here it percolates to the outside surface and evaporates to the atmosphere, thus removing latent heat and cooling the whole assembly.

This contrasts with other ineffectual methods such as attempts to insulate the outdoor emergency shower assembly, valves to exhaust and replace the heated water or even dry pipe arrangements which fail to meet the one second maximum time allowed in the Standards for the application of water to the victim.
